KUU: Where Contemporary Design Meets Mexican Jewelry

It is easy to fall in love with a piece of jewelry because of the way it looks. But how often do we stop to think about everything that had to happen before it existed? Behind every piece are design decisions, time, and craftsmanship that rarely become part of the conversation. Yet those are precisely the elements that define its value long before it reaches the person who wears it. KUU has built its vision around that very idea.

In conversation with Topics That Transform, Arizbeth Fierro, CEO and co-founder of KUU, reflects on the making of a brand that understands jewelry as the meeting point between contemporary design, craftsmanship, and permanence.

Jewelry Built Through Identity

Mexican jewelry has never truly been absent from the conversation. Think of names like TANE, Daniel Espinosa, or Bernarda—brands that have long demonstrated the richness of Mexican design. In recent years, however, a new generation of brands has emerged, approaching jewelry not only through aesthetics, but through identity. KUU belongs to that conversation.

Founded in 2014 in the heart of Guadalajara, Jalisco, the brand has developed its own design language, where contemporary design—bold, disruptive, and at times even irreverent—meets master craftsmanship. A vision that, rather than reinterpreting Mexico’s cultural heritage, recognizes that the true value of a piece also lies in the people who make it possible. “At KUU, we build from real working relationships with the people who make every piece possible. That distinction matters to us, and it’s a principle we never compromise,” says Arizbeth Fierro.

That way of thinking ultimately shaped KUU’s identity. Rather than creating around trends, the brand develops pieces where the creative process carries the same weight as the final result.

When KUU Found Its Voice

Today, it is difficult to imagine KUU without its distinctive identity. But the brand did not begin with a fully defined design language. As it evolved, design gradually claimed a more central role in the creative process, eventually becoming one of the pillars of the brand.

“We realized it when design began demanding more space within the process. Our first collection—Martha, named after our founder—followed a much more classic approach. Over time, we developed a stronger language of our own, where art and design became part of the brand’s DNA,” Fierro recalls.

Today, that language is reflected in a collection of earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, and pins, where sculptural silhouettes, organic lines, and craftsmanship come together through a distinctly contemporary aesthetic. Since then, every collection has pursued the same goal: creating pieces that can outlast a season, where design is not merely aesthetic, but a way of expressing the brand’s identity.

Designing to Endure

In an industry driven by constant change, creating timeless jewelry is no easy task. For KUU, however, that has been the intention from the very beginning. Rather than following the rhythm of seasonal trends, the brand creates jewelry designed to remain relevant over time.

“At KUU, we believe true luxury lies in time. We take it very seriously when creating every collection and every piece—it requires presence, intention, and precision. In a fast-moving market, that has become our strongest argument,” explains Fierro.

That same philosophy also shapes the way the brand understands its own pieces. More than accessories, each one is the result of a creative process designed to outlast the moment in which it was created. “Every KUU piece begins with a design decision: a carefully considered form, a dialogue between materials, and an intention that goes beyond accompanying a single season. Fashion responds to the moment—we create pieces that remain meaningful over time,” she says.

Perhaps that is KUU’s greatest strength: not simply the way its pieces look, but the stories they continue telling once they become part of someone’s life. “We love hearing from clients who tell us that wearing a KUU piece starts conversations—not just because of how it looks, but because of everything behind it: the time invested, the craftsmanship, and the design decisions that define it. That is what we hope people carry with them: a story worth telling,” Fierro shares.

More Than an International Reference

Conversations about Mexican design often begin by comparing it to other markets. For KUU, however, the goal has never been to measure itself against international references, but to build a proposal rooted in its own context.

“Mexico is home to some of the world’s most sophisticated ancestral techniques—crafts that other countries have successfully turned into global references. Italy did it with its own traditions. At KUU, we are building a narrative that creates value from within, through ambition and design. That is the work we see as our responsibility,” explains Fierro.

Rather than responding to conversations shaped by external references, the brand is committed to building its own narrative. Latin America has so much to offer—a way of understanding beauty, materials, and processes that is entirely its own. We still have a long road ahead, but the direction is clear: to build from what is ours, not as a response to Europe, but as a proposal in its own right,” Fierro concludes.

Epilogue

After talking about design, craftsmanship, and permanence, the inevitable question is what happens when a brand looks toward the future. For Arizbeth Fierro, the answer returns to the same idea that has shaped this entire conversation: to remain.

“I hope KUU proves that Mexican design can stand alongside any international proposal. And I hope the pieces we are creating today—including what is coming next—will still be desired and relevant ten years from now. That permanence will be the real proof,” she concludes.
